Open Call Salone del Mobile 2017
Creative Industries Fund NL is inviting designers to submit proposals for a presentation during the Salone del Mobile 2017, one of the largest and widest-ranging international fairs for furniture and product design. The next edition runs from 4 to 9 April 2017. This open call is the only opportunity to receive a grant for participation in the Salone del Mobile 2017.
The Open Call has ended.
With this Open Call, Creatives Industries Fund NL aims to showcase the excellent quality of the Dutch design sector in Milan. The Fund will therefore be making a selection of proposals in which the presentation and the designs to be exhibited are exceptional with regard to their artistic quality and presentational format. The Open Call is focused on three key objectives of the Internationalization Programme:
strengthen the image of the Dutch design sector;
establish and build sustainable collaborative relationships;
expand the Dutch design sector’s international sphere of activity.
It is possible to apply for a solo presentation, but for the 2017 Open Call there is a preference for proposals that involve exceptional forms of collaboration or are aimed at a group presentation.
You must submit your proposal by 23 November 2017 at the latest via the Fund’s online application environment, selecting ‘Open Call’ from the drop-down menu, then the ‘Open Call: Salone del Mobile 2017’ (23 November) round. The project proposal must consist of:
Your motivation for participating and a description of how this fits into a long-term strategy for the development of your own design practice (max. two A4 pages).
A plan with a clear-cut, concise description of the presentation’s aims and objectives, including a description of the intended presentation venue and the reasons for making this choice. In the case of a joint or group presentation, the proposal should give the reasons for this collaboration and explain how the designers were or are being chosen (max. four A4 pages).
A portfolio with visual documentation of the designs that will be presented (max. 15 pages).
A provisional budget of costs and income (max. one A4 page).
A design studio or designer can apply for a maximum of €5,000 per proposal, while for a presentation with two or more designers/design studios the subsidy available is between €5,000 and €10,000 per proposal, and for a group presentation a sum between €10,000 and €20,000 is available for each proposal. The grant can only be used for the travel and accommodation costs of the designers, transportation costs, renting the venue and presentation/communications. These items must be clearly presented in the budget and substantiated by quotes or indicative amounts. The income items must specify your personal contribution or support from external parties.
A concise CV of the designer(s) involved (max. two A4 pages).
A certificate of registration with a Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) that is dated within the last year. If you are not yet registered with a KvK, then this can still be submitted subsequent to selection.
A representative illustration for communication purposes.
If your application fails to meet these specifications it will be ineligible for evaluation.
N.B. Request your login details for the online application environment in good time and familiarize yourself with the application form. The validation of a new user account can take up to one working day.
The Fund will select a number of proposals in consultation with external advisers, basing their evaluation on the following criteria:
the degree to which the presentation is distinctive in its artistic quality and presentational form;
the degree to which the presentation contributes to strengthening the international image of the Dutch creative industries;
the degree to which the selection of presentations represents the Dutch design sector.
The evaluation takes the form of a tender: several proposals will be prioritized within the available budget. The Fund will only communicate about the selected proposals; it will not enter into any correspondence about the rejection of individual proposals.
A maximum of €75,000 is available for this Open Call.
The Open Call procedure is described in the Fund’s General Subsidy Regulations. The selected proposals will receive a grant from the Grant Programme for Internationalization. For questions about the Open Call and the application procedure, please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org, Grant Officer of the Grant Programme for Design: email@example.com or tel. +31 (0)10 436 1600.
Before and during the Salone del Mobile, the Fund will undertake PR activities in relation to the selected presentations. Selected applicants are expected to supply the Fund with text and visual materials as required. After selection, we will contact you about the conditions and deadlines for providing such materials.
The Fund’s secretariat can offer no advice regarding a draft proposal.
Applicants will receive an acknowledgement of receipt by e-mail within a week after the deadline.
The selected proposals will be announced in week 50, by e-mail and in Creative Industries Fund NL’s newsletter.
The Fund’s secretariat will contact the selected parties.
Creative Industries Fund NL is organizing two gatherings for the selected parties: one prior to the Salone and one after the event. The aim of the first meeting is to ensure the selected presentations are optimally prepared to represent the Dutch design sector in Milan. The selected parties will have an opportunity to meet and share ideas and experiences to make the most of participating in the Salone. The second meeting is intended for an evaluation of the designers’ participation and presentation in Milan. The Fund organized similar gatherings in preparation for the Salone del Mobile 2016. You can read this news item (in Dutch only) for some tips on how to make the most of your presentation in Milan.
