Open Call: Venice Architecture Biennale 2016

Creative Industries Fund NL is calling on designers to submit a proposal for participation in the 2016 Architecture Biennale in Venice. This biennale is one of the world's most important international architecture exhibitions, and the upcoming edition runs from 28 May to 27 November 2016. This open call is the only opportunity to receive a grant for participation in the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Theme
As this year's curator, Alejandro Aravena is seizing upon the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale to put new architectural approaches to urgent social tasks on the agenda. 'Reporting from the Front' showcases the role of architects in the struggle to improve the living conditions of people all over the world. The theme focuses on architectures that manifest themselves within the constraints of a scarcity of means, as well as on designs that undermine the status quo and produce architecture for the common good, however modest in scale these may be.

Submissions
The deadline for submitting a proposal via the Fund's online application environment is 2 March. Select the 'Open Call' option, then 'Venice Architecture Biennale 2016' from the pull-down menu.

Eligibility:
Projects that involve participation in the biennale's official main programme or collateral events. A substantive motivation from the inviting party and/or curator is a precondition for this.
Projects that involve participation on one's own initiative, in which case you must state how the project relates to the biennale's theme and why the activity and participants are relevant.
Various project forms are eligible, e.g. a series of lectures, an exhibition, presentation or research.

The project proposal must consist of:

a clear, concise description of the proposal's structure and objective, as well as a motivation for participation;
a description of the intended venue;
relevant visual documentation of work by the participants concerned and images that provide an impression of the proposed project;
the invitation and its substantive motivation;
a realistic budget, clearly indicating the status of any co-funding. The requested contribution is the budget's balancing item.
Appendix I: CV (max. 2 pages per proposal);
Appendix II: proof of registration from a Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) that is less than a year old. If that is not the case, then it is still possible to register with a KvK subsequent to selection.

Format
The project proposal is a PDF file of no more than 10 pages (excluding CV and KvK certificate) in A4 format and is no larger than 10 MB in size. If the application fails to meet the description above, then its content cannot be evaluated.
N.B. Request your login for the online application environment in good time and familiarize yourself with the application form. The validation of a new user account can take up to one workday. For further information see the guidelines for online applications.

Objective
Creative Industries Fund NL's intended purpose with this Open Call is to showcase the excellent quality of Dutch architecture and urban planning at a prominent event. The Fund is supporting participation in the biennale within the framework of the Grant Programme for Architecture, thus contributing to the following objectives:

Enhance the social added value of architecture from a cultural perspective
Promote excellence in architecture
Foster interest in architecture in the Netherlands and abroad

Evaluation
In consultation with external experts, the Fund will select a number of proposals for participation during the biennale from the submissions, based on the following criteria:

the degree in which the project relates to the biennale's theme;
the relevance to contemporary design practice;
the degree in which the content and chosen project form enhance each other and are distinctive in this regard;
projects for which there is a substantive motivation from the inviting party will be considered an advantage.

The evaluation takes the form of a tender: a number of proposals will be prioritized within the available budget. The Fund will only communicate about the selected proposals; it will not enter into any correspondence about the rejection of individual proposals.
A maximum of €150,000 is available for this Open Call. The Fund expects to be able to support several proposals.
