Talent Development Grant Programme

budget 2021: € 1,330,000

With its Talent Development Grant Programme, the Creative Industries Fund NL is supporting a new generation of designers and makers with a 12-month grant to further develop and profile their own artistic talent, professional practice and cultural entrepreneurship. For 2021–2022, there are 50 12-month grants of € 25,000 available.

  • Who is this scheme intended for?

  • The Talent Development Grant Programme is open to makers and designers who have at least one year and at most four years' work experience in the area of design, architecture or digital culture in the Netherlands. The grant programme is open to makers and designers who have graduated from a relevant design study, but also to makers and designers who have, through their practice, developed themselves professionally without having completed a design study.

    Makers and designers with a relevant degree: If you graduated from one of these design studies (PDF) no more than 4 years ago, then you should submit an application to the regular Talent Development Grant Programme selection round. The deadline for applicants with a relevant degree is 10 February 2021.

    Makers and designers without a relevant degree: For makers and designers who have, through their practice, developed themselves professionally without having completed a relevant design study there are Scout Nights. The deadline for registering for the Scout Nights is 24 February 2021.

    There are a number of conditions and limitations attached to the Talent Development Grant Programme (PDF), so please read the grant programme carefully before submitting an application.
  • which projects are eligible for a grant?

  • With the Talent Development Grant Programme, you can apply for a 12-month grant to invest in your own development. The 12-month grant of € 25,000 consists of three parts: one freely disposable part for personal artistic and professional development (€ 15,000), one part for the professionalization of the personal practice (€ 5,000) and one part for presentation purposes (€ 5,000).

    The Talent Development Grant Programme has various selection rounds. After you have been selected in the first selection round or during a Scout Night you will receive € 1,000 to draw up a development plan. The final selection for the 50 available 12-month grants will be made based on the development plans submitted in the second selection round.

  • what is assessed?

  • Applications are assessed on the basis of the Talent Development Grant Programme regulations (PDF). Make sure that you are aware of the conditions, criteria and objectives stated in them before submitting an application.

    Criteria
    The advisory committee and, during the Scout Nights the jury, will make the selection based on the criteria set out below:
    1. Quality of the work: When assessing the quality of the work, the coherence between the maker's motivation and the artistically relevant principles is examined. What is the maker's substantive objective or principle and how does this translate into research, a design challenge, form or another means? The advisers look at how the direction for the development year, as described, fits within the personal practice and portfolio. In doing so, the advisers take into account the design practices that are linked to the various disciplines and sub-disciplines, the circumstances in which the applicant works and the methodology applied.
    2. Environmental awareness and positioning: With this criterion, the advisers assess the extent to which the makers have a good understanding of the cultural, social or other environmental factors connected to their personal practice. They look at the artistically relevant issues and/or social themes the applicant relates to and the degree to which they critically reflect their own position with respect to these issues.
    3. Development capability: The advisers appraise the maker's potential for artistic and professional development. They look at which new steps the applicant intends to take during the development year and if they are in line with the maker's motivation and artistically relevant principles.
    4. The degree to which the applicant's practice can potentially be considered as distinctive within the creative industry. This criterion scrutinizes how the maker's practice is positioned with respect to existing knowledge and practices within the area of expertise and the measure of added value it provides.
  • How do you prepare an application?

  • The advisory committee will process your application based on the application form and the attachments submitted. A list of the documents we require is set out below:

    Makers and designers with a relevant degree (deadline 10 February):
    1. Application form.
    2. Motivation letter of no more than 2 pages in PDF (portrait layout, A4 format).
    3. Portfolio of no more than 10 pages in PDF (portrait layout, A4 format, max. 15 MB).
    Visual documentation in your portfolio must include work from the past 2 to 3 years with details such as title, year, size, technique and any additional information per project of no more than 100 words, e.g. about the context and any collaboration. Clearly indicate your part in any collaboration projects.
    If you add any moving images to your portfolio, make sure that they are viewable through a link to an online platform (Vimeo, YouTube or suchlike). Also include stills plus captions for each video in your portfolio. The maximum duration is 3 minutes. If you want to show several videos, then make a compilation of no longer than 5 minutes.
    4. Curriculum vitae of no more than 2 pages in PDF (portrait layout, A4 format).
    5. Copy of your degree in PDF.
    6. If available: registration with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce or a Chamber of Commerce that falls under the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

    Makers and designers without a relevant degree (deadline 24 February):
    1. Application form.
    2. Curriculum vitae of no more than 2 pages in PDF (portrait layout, A4 format).
    3. Portfolio of no more than 10 pages in PDF (portrait layout, A4 format, max. 15 MB).
    Visual documentation in your portfolio must include work from the past 2 to 3 years with details such as title, year, size, technique and any additional information per project of no more than 100 words, e.g. about the context and any collaboration. Clearly indicate your part in any collaboration projects.
    If you add any moving images to your portfolio, make sure that they are viewable through a link to an online platform (Vimeo, YouTube or suchlike). Also include stills plus captions for each video in your portfolio. The maximum duration is 3 minutes. If you want to show several videos, then make a compilation of no longer than 5 minutes.
    4. A video pitch of approx. 3 minutes.
    5. If available: registration with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce or a Chamber of Commerce that falls under the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

    The Fund organizes a meeting in the second week of May for those who are selected in the first selection round and the Scout Nights, during which information is provided about drawing up the development plan. The deadline for submitting your development plan is 19 May 2021. It is not possible to submit a draft version of your development plan for feedback to the Fund.

    Applications may be submitted in English.

  • Acceptance
    When you have submitted your application, the Fund Desk will check if your application complies with the formal requirements of the Talent Development Grant Programme (PDF).

    Assessment
    The selection under the Talent Development Grant Programme consists of two rounds. In the first selection round and on Scout Nights, the advisory committee and the jury respectively will compose a longlist based on the portfolio, the curriculum vitae and the motivation letter/pitch and on the Talent Development Grant Programme. The participants selected for the longlist - 60 from the selection round and 20 from the Scout Nights - will be asked to draw up a development plan.

    For the final selection, the advisory committee will assess the development plans submitted against the Talent Development Grant Programme. The way this is done as well as the criteria for this are set out in Article 10 of the Talent Development Grant Programme (PDF). The committee issues its advice to the Fund's board.

    Decision
    The board decides whether or not to provide the grant and takes the committee's advice into consideration in doing so. The selection for the longlist will be announced approximately six weeks after the closing date. All applicants will receive a report in which the committee outlines the applications it processed. For this stage, no individual feedback will be given. Scout Night participants will receive feedback from the jury during the selection night.

    The final selection for the 50 12-month grants will be announced in early August 2021. All applicants who submitted a development plan will receive personal feedback. The grant period for the selected participants runs from August/September up to and including October of the following year.

    Accountability
    If you receive a grant from the Fund you will have to comply with the obligations. Please read the important information about accountability in Articles 13 to 17. Two weeks before the conclusion of your project, you will be asked by email to submit your accountability form in the online application environment.
