We, the Presidents of Planet Earth
Stëfan Schäfer & Archive Books
We, the Presidents of Planet Earth is a design study and publication on how collective memory operates within a culturally defined perception of time, taking Russia as its starting point. The core of the book is a dialogue between the futuristic poet Velimir Khlebnikov and the Kalmyks, a Mongolian minority in Russia. These two worlds are connected and portrayed in different ways. The starting point is the 'zeg' (eyelid) symbol, which is important in the culture of the Kalmyk people but has changed its meaning under the influence of other cultures. Within this trajectory Schäfer works together with artist Jasmijn Visser and Berlin scientist Elena Vogman. Archive Books is a relevant partner in guiding work with experimental and alternative narrative structures. The publication and the study will be presented with an additional public programme at the end of 2019 at Stroom The Hague, Archive Books Berlin and the Museum of Moscow.
