Annual Report 2019: five times the power of design

26 march 2020

While COVID-19 has the world in its grip and has an enormous impact on our daily lives, it's almost impossible for us to imagine that a few weeks ago we were in a completely different position. The cultural sector has also been hit exceptionally hard. In these uncertain times, the Fund aims to remain a stable factor where designers can find support for their creativity. The fact that we're focusing, now more than ever, on what's to come makes it strange to look back.

Nonetheless, the Creative Industries Fund NL is today publishing the 2019 annual report, with five portraits of designers and makers on how they relate to an ever-changing world. Among other things, they examine the current social challenges facing cities, a move towards a more sustainable textile industry and the welfare of patients in hospitals. We hear from Michelle Provoost from the Independent School for the City, founder of Knitwear Lab Thijs Verhaar, musician and artist Chagall, artist Siba Sahabi and designer Sjoerd ter Borg.

Besides the portraits, the annual report contains animated infographics that provide insight into the distribution of the budget available for 2019 and the results achieved. With 1741 applications processed and 752 grants awarded, last year's percentage of applications receiving grants came to 43%. That is higher than the two previous years. In 2019, the Fund awarded a total of 16.1 million euro in grants to designers, cultural organizations and festivals. As a result, in 2019 the Fund once again made a substantial contribution to the quality of professional design practice. And although the circumstances are completely different at the moment, the Fund will continue to do so in 2020 and we will carry on processing applications for all the grant programmes (with the exception of the Internationalization Grant Programme and the Vouchers for Presentations Abroad, which have been suspended for the time being). We are committed to reducing the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the Dutch design sector.

We wish you a great deal of inspiration, creativity and good health. Together, we will put our shoulders to the wheel in the coming period.
