Vouchers for participation at SXSW 2020

25 october 2019

The next edition of South by Southwest will take place from 13 to 22 March 2020 in Austin, Texas. This festival is known for its varied and cutting-edge programme in the fields of music, technology, film and every possible crossover between these disciplines. Dutch makers and designers who have succeeded in gaining a place in the official programme may be eligible for support from the Fund.

The Fund is making six vouchers available for Dutch parties selected by SXSW that are participating in the official programme during the festival. The vouchers have a value of € 3,000 and are intended as a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs. In addition, the Fund is reserving a sum of up to € 30,000 to cover the production costs of two projects that are directly related to presentations in the Art Program. The Fund intends to divide this sum equally between two projects.

how do I get into the official programme?
The SXSW programme has an open structure. This means that anyone can submit a project proposal in one of the relevant programme sections on the SXSW website. A programme is compiled from all the entries the festival receives from all over the world. Deadlines for some of these sections have already closed. An overview of all the deadlines can be found here.

how do I qualify for support?
To receive a voucher, the applicant must have been selected to participate in one of the following programme sections:

the 'interactive' section within the conference programme;
the Virtual Cinema exhibition or;
the SXSW Art Program (deadline 11 October)

Participants in other parts of the festival, such as the Game Expo, the Trade Show or the various award competitions, are not eligible for support, unless there are compelling arguments for this. The conference programme is composed by means of the so-called 'panel picker', where everyone can submit their ideas or topics for a session, workshop or presentation. As a result, the conference consists of numerous large and small part-sessions. The Fund provides a maximum of two vouchers per session.

The Fund does not play any role whatsoever in the selection of submitted proposals.

If you would like to know if you are eligible for a voucher, it is advisable to contact the Fund first, before submitting a proposal to SXSW. In the event of selection by SXSW, the reflection period to say yes definitively is actually very short. Granting of vouchers will take place in the order in which applications were received, after confirmation of selection by SXSW has been submitted to the Fund.

Applications for a voucher or production budget can only be made via the online application environment. Choose the 'SXSW 2020 voucher programme'. Applications may be submitted until 1 February 2020 at the latest, provided the maximum number of vouchers has not yet been granted.

It is not possible to apply for participation at SXSW via the regular voucher procedure.
